Biologic therapy is a type of treatment that works with your immune system. It is not used for all types of leukemia. It is used mainly for some cases of CML. The drug most often used is called interferon. It was once the most common treatment for CML, but newer targeted drugs have been shown to be better in most cases. Interferon may be used if targeted drugs aren't effective.
You may have biologic therapy from months to years. You'll most likely get an injection each day under the skin. You can have this done as an outpatient.
Side effects from this therapy can be severe. But they often improve after the treatment ends. Here are possible side effects of this therapy. Ask your doctor which ones you are most likely to have.
