NEWNAN, Ga. (Sept. 29, 2009) – Piedmont Newnan Hospital (PNH) has partnered with the Central Educational Center (CEC) and the Exploring Division of the Flint River Council (FRC), the local Boy Scouts of America Council, to help prepare Coweta County’s youth for careers in healthcare.
The mission of the collaborative effort is to provide work-based learning opportunities through the Explorer Program which will allow team members to participate in relevant and authentic career experiences while building well-rounded youth, promoting exemplary work ethic, and expanding partnerships among the school system and local businesses.
The work-based learning at Piedmont Newnan Hospital was open to high school sophomores and juniors interested in pursuing healthcare as a career who met course requirements. There are currently 18 team members participating in this year’s program, which consists of 13 weeks of classes that give students genuine healthcare learning opportunities, featuring guest lecturers, presentations, activities at PNH and a community service project. Students learn about the careers and daily routines of nurses, dieticians, dentists, paramedics, physical therapists, veterinarians, primary care physicians any many more.
“We are thrilled to be participating in this incredible program in partnership with such wonderful organizations,” said Michael Bass, president and CEO of Piedmont Newnan Hospital. “The Explorer Program benefits all of Coweta County. These students will become the future leaders of our community, and we are honored to help prepare them for their potential careers.”
The Boy Scouts of America’s Explorer Program’s purpose is to provide experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. Explorers are ready to investigate the meaning of interdependence in their personal relationships and communities.
