NEWNAN, Ga. (July 19, 2010)—The Explorer Division of the Flint River Council, the local Boy Scouts of America Council, and the Central Education Center have recognized two Piedmont Newnan Hospital officers for their part in organizing a work-based learning program for high school students. Michael Bass, president and CEO, and Ed Racht, M.D., chief medical officer, were recently presented with a plaque of appreciation for their ongoing support for healthcare education.
Bass and Racht helped organize the program, which was open to high school sophomores and juniors interested in pursuing healthcare as a career and who met course requirements. The 13-week course gave students genuine healthcare learning opportunities, featuring guest lecturers, presentations, activities at Piedmont Newnan and a community service project. Students learned about the careers and daily routines of nurses, dieticians, dentists, paramedics, physical therapists and primary care physicians, among others.
“The Explorer Program benefits all of Coweta County,” said Bass. “These students will become the future leaders of our community, and we are honored to help prepare them for their potential careers.”
The purpose of The Boy Scouts of America’s Explorer Program is to provide experiences to help young people mature and prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. Explorers are ready to investigate the meaning of interdependence in their personal relationships and communities.
